13th-22nd June 2014, Operation Transportation Participants Posts and Profiles

A GUIDE TO OPERATION TRANSPORTATION  2014:

This year’s “Operation Transportation” leaders included:

b Psychiatric Nurse:  Siobhán Ní Mhurchú ( click on the name to read all her posts!) originally from Millstreet, now living near Blarney.
b Cork City Cycling Couples:
b Two Ballincollig Based Friends, who had not cycled since their pre-teen years:

1.
Siobhán was the sportiest cyclist of the group. For her final two cycles she covered 35km and 60km respectively! Prior to “Operation Transportation” Siobhán had not been doing much cycling.

She introduced herself with the words:
After not being on the bike much over the past two years, I've decided to take part in the operation transportation, an excellent way to ease back into cycling, and hopefully develop a love for that feeling of hopping on the bike, taking in the scenery and getting fresh air into the lungs..”

By the end of the challenge she had agreed to attempt the Ring of Kerry Cycle- all 180kms of it    two weeks later (July5th)!

2.      Michelle and Anthony live on  the Southern Road in Douglas and their “Operation Transportation” diary posts touched on a lot of hot topics for cyclists like bicycle theft, cars parking in cycle lanes and angry beeps from motorists.

These posts sparked off some interesting research and were some of the most popular on blogger and Facebook.

3.      Margaret and John decided to undertake “Operation Transportation”  in order to raise funds for Pieta House . The couple live near a Pieta House centre and even visited the facility during “Operation Transportation” to see how any funds raised help to provide life saving services to people who are feeling suicidal or who are engaged in self-harm.

So Margaret and John, who only recently got around to buying bikes after several bike-free years, really made an all out effort to cycle  as much as possible, during the ten day cycle challenge. Most days they managed one long and two shorter cycles. Some days they went on two long cycles or one of them squeezed in 5 or 6 cycles. For the ten days of the challenge they seem to have done little else outside of work but cycle!

In the process, they discovered nearby amenities hitherto unknown to them and Margaret combined her re-discovered love of cycling, with her passion for good food. So readers were taken on mouth-watering cycle tours of Cork’s finest eateries, small food shops and market delights.

4.        Andrea Minnie and Maria Kalaitzake are friends and neighbours from Ballincollig, who thought that they had forgotten how to cycle. So we rented two bikes for them to use during the challenge and enrolled them on the cycle safety skills course. They lapped it all up and surely aroused the curiosity of their neighbours with all their practice runs up and down the road. Their children were greatly impressed by the whole enterprise.

Andrea discovered that: Bike riding is a great way of spending time with the kids outdoors, and it can be done pretty much all year.”

One day she surprised her son at school “by collecting him, with the bikes in the back of the car. He was so excited to go for an after-school bike ride."

All the way he was saying: “Wow, Mommy you’re getting so good at it!”
Andrea also found that cycling opened up “a new world of social opportunities.”
While at a friend’s garden party she “was suddenly invited to come on bike rides all over Cork.”

Maria on the other hand was busy re-discovering her inner child. She took up the “Operation Transportation” challenge because she just wanted to “become one of those people who effortlessly use their bikes to get from A to... B (school, shops, park...)”, plus of course she read an e-card proclaiming that “riding a bicycle everyday makes you more awesome than the general population”.

However, even though she took up the challenge for practical reasons, she soon discovered how much fun it was and would happily run out the door bike in tow, when she got the chance because often her short cycle might be the only time “all day that I was ALONE- and all parents know what a treat that can be ...”

Mostly though she discovered: “HOW good cycling actually feels…” After her first cycle she wrote: “I felt very... free... and youthful!

22nd June 2014 Maria's Oscar Speech

"Get a rental bike, get comfortable with it... and get on the road!"

  Maria writes:

It's the last day of Operation Transportation-sob.

I did the cycle from Ballincollig to UCC again. This time I went much faster so I did it in 1 hour round-trip.

It really up's the exercise element, when you go fast; I was literally sweating hard with my heart racing. So all in all I had a really good workout!

The article with it gives tips for dressing

for an item on why you should date a cyclist!

This week has been fab. We couldn't have imagined such perfect weather. Having the bike has opened up such different experiences for me. It was so much fun and so...easy! I think so many people are daunted by cycling in traffic but it’s actually grand, especially if you are already a driver and know all the rules already. I have to say that all the drivers I encountered were very courteous and patient.

Maria had no need for the sign on the left from: http://www.sodahead.com/fun/are-you-a-courteous-driver/question-2687507/ however she might like the one on the right ( Found on opinion.latimes.com) since most of her motorist interaction has been really positive!

To anyone who feels like they would like to cycle more but are afraid of traffic, I would say get a rental bike, get comfortable with it... and get on the road. Just do it! You will know within a few trips whether or not this is for you.

Thanks so much to everyone who helped organize Operation Transportation. An extra special thanks to Sarah for giving me this experience. Thanks to 'The Bike Shed' for supplying the excellent bike, and to Miro and Darren for the skills training, which really built my confidence.

Happy cycling everyone!

21st June 2014: Maria squeezes in a Cycle Before Il Divo

Lazy Days can be Biking Days

Maria writes:

Quick post before I'm off to Il Divo for a night out!
I had a nice lazy Saturday morning with the kids; it took a lot of motivation to get me out of the house but finally I decided to move... so I headed off to Blarney with the bikes and roller-skates.

I had to take it very easy as Marisa was struggling to keep-up on the roller skates. (Again I was staying with my lazy theme of the day!).

In the lovely warm weather, there were a lot of cyclists out and about.
From the Movie: Napoleon Dynamite

Sadly, my Operation Transportation days are nearly up and I'm really going to miss this bike! I don't want to imagine going back to the car full time.

Image on the left is from a spanish blog: http://www.diariosenbicicleta.com/ (the bicycle diaries).

Image on the right is from another spanish website: http://elplanetaciclista.blogspot.ie  My patchy spansih translation ) feel free to correct) is that the caption means:
"Mechanics of the Bicycle": "The bicycle is a curious vehicle. It's passenger is it's engine."

The benefits of a Bicycle chart was found on a blog called http://www.110pounds.com by a woman who explains how she lost 110 pounds by changing her lifestyle to include things like more cycling!

20th of June 2014: Maria overcomes the wobbles and "vonts to be alone"

Sofa's Beware:

The Bikes are Taking Over!

Maria writes:

It was a very busy day today, so there was only a very humble 15 minute bike ride for me.

Nevertheless it was fun and relaxing and probably the only 15 minutes all day that I was ALONE- and all parents know what a treat that can be ... especially when badly needed.

Going for a cycle is a great way to either "be alone" or be "left alone".
I wonder if Greta Garbo knew this
?
I noticed I'm finally after getting to grips with starting and stopping too. It probably sounds silly to most cyclists but as a beginner these are a little tricky and wobbly!! Anyway now I am a lot more confident with the bike and hoping I look it too! I'm sure I frightened a few drivers the other day when I was taking off quite unsteadily at traffic lights.

This image is from: https://bighairmetamorphosis.wordpress.com/category/life/diets/ - a very amusing blog by a woman trying to change her life one funny cartoon at a time.
Her account of  biking exploits are well worth a peek..
I spent some time teaching my daughter to ride her bike without her stabilisers, not successful yet but she's getting braver- another few days and she'll be off I'd say.

Right now my living room had 3 bikes in it so it’s not my usual relaxing domain. As a family we have NEVER used our bikes so much-long may it continue.

19th June 2014: Maria Escapes...

Trap a Mother into Babysitting, Grab a Bike and head for Freedom!

Maria writes:

My Mother is just back from holidays and came to visit me so I trapped her into babysitting and ran out the door, bike in tow.

I cycled from Ballincollig to UCC again, this time by myself and it was a breeze...I'm delighted with the fact that now it only took me 35 minutes each way. I don't think I saw one bit of nice scenery, as I was so busy concentrating on traffic and safety.

The only bit of exciting news on this journey was that I swallowed a fly! Apparently I cycle with my mouth open-
attractive.....

17th June Maria Climbs Every Mountain

Cycling is just

Part of my Routine now!

Maria writes:

Today I did some nice "getting from A to B" cycling.
I took a cycle to my friends house in the morning. It's up a hill and I was tempted to get off the bike but I persevered and finally arrived at my friend's house panting and sweating, but fee...ling gooood!!
From: http://cyclenewbie.wordpress.com/2009/03/08/cycling-uphill-burbage-road/
Of course that meant it was a blast coming home, racing down said hill...and ok... I'll admit it-singing too (oh yeah!) I felt like Maria Von Trapp (without kids in tow). After that I cycled to pick up my daughter and came home.

Maria Von Trapp High On a Hill ......Leyo Leyo Lay!

I enjoyed being on the roads today. I exercised my right to take 'central position' in the lanes if needed and I am getting more confident with the bike itself, using different gears and so forth. Today was my favourite day so far as I didn't feel I HAD to push myself to cycle, I simply used it in my daily activities. Very enjoyable.

16th June Maria Braves Main Road Traffic for the First Time

Maria Wonders

What else she is Capable of!

 Maria writes:
Just back from my first proper cycle ON THE MAIN ROADS (GULP!).
My good friend Mary led the way. She is a cycling fiend, so I was in good hands.
Maria is lucky enough to live on a "green route"
with Advanced Stop Lines and Cycle Lanes
most of the  way from Ballincollig to UCC.
We cycled from Ballincollig to UCC and it was really good.

It's quite safe and easy actually. I w...ill attempt to do this cycle route twice more during the week, by myself. I am quite proud of myself.
I never thought I'd feel so comfortable on the bike after just a few days- jeez I wonder what else I'm potentially capable of that I don't know about?-skiing, mountain climbing, white water rafting? who knows!!
Also I completely forgot to take a photo so instead here's a picture of the future me (lol)

15th June: the Day Maria's Bike Became a Speed-boat!

Maria's Cycle Skills Delight And Defy Expectations

 Maria Writes:

Day 3 of Operation Transportation. Well I must admit I woke up this morning to a bit of saddle discomfort- ouch!

Tips on Causes and Cures for Saddle Soreness can be found with this image here: http://blog.supersizedbikes.com/2013/05/6-most-common-causes-of-bicycle-saddle-sore/
Brought my two kids to the regional park today for a bit of fun. Danny had his bike and Marisa was on roller skates. They were just dying to see me on the bike. I think they were expecting me to fall off!!
Maria, Marissa and Danny have some active Fun in the Sun In Ballincollig Regional Park
It was another gorgeous day and we soared around the park on the bikes. Marisa was shattered trying to keep up so we hatched a plan whereby she held on to the back of my t-shirt and I pulled (dragged!) her along- water-ski style. Yes I am definitely getting braver.

Editor's Footnote:

Saddle-soreness can be prevented by making sure that your saddle is the right width and height for you. Saddle covers and padded cycle shorts may help too.
That said I personally have never worn cycle shorts but  I never get any saddle pain from my beat-up old saddle because it is wide and foam filled and quite comfortable to sit on...
There are plenty of videos on line about choosing the right saddle and plenty of powders for sale to soothe and protect the gluteal muscles.
One book dedicated to the subject for women is the aptly named "Saddle Sore" by  Molly Hurford available form her website:http://saddlesorewomen.com

14th of June Marias day of Exhiliration, Excitement, Testing her body and Aquiring New Skills

Five hours of Testing, Training

and having Fun

Editor's Preface:

Maria was the only Operation Transportation Leader to take up the offer of free Fitness Testing from LeisureWorld (- so far at least!). You can see below that she seemed pretty happy and excited beforehand. Afterwards she admitted that the test exercises were pretty intense at times.

I gather that the testers ask you to cycle at your fastest to see what your optimal heartrate is. The bike they use for the test is pictured below.
Maria must be super fit I reckon, considering what she decided to do after fitness testing and three hours of cycle skill training...
Read on to find out!

Maria is all smiles before Deirdre puts her through her paces

Maria writes:

So today was the bike skills training day. It went well I must say!

I found that when we were talking about what to do I felt quite anxious, but when actually DOING it, it all came naturally. The teachers were so helpful and informative.

Maria demonstrates how to find the optimal saddle height to cycle safely with minimal effort.
Watch the video on : http://youtu.be/m0ImKe-Hem8

Some of the Stunning scenery to be appreciated by cyclists adventurous enough to brave Cork's hilly North-side.
So far cycling amongst traffic has been a lot less scary than I imagined. After the training I still had an hour before I had to collect my kiddies so I went for a ...cycle on the new back road by Apple Computer which was just amazing. The scenery there is stunning and there are cycle lanes on both sides and very little traffic so I was able to really let myself go and have fun.

Something that really surprises me is HOW good cycling actually feels. Its nothing like driving or walking- it's really exhilarating and exciting. Initially I joined Operation Transportation for the practical benefits of cycling but I'm fast discovering how much fun it really is!!

13th June Maria Discovers the Rejuvenating Magic of Bikes

It's true ... you never forget how to ride a bike!!

Maria writes:

Andrea and myself picked up our rental bikes today and well, I'm happy to confirm that its true ... you never forget how to ride a bike! Okay granted I was a tad wobbly, and sharp turns posed a risk, but all in all I WAS GREAT !!
Maria gives getting back in the saddle a thumbs up!

And what a beautiful day we had for it. It was such a great feeling, sun on my back, the breeze in my face- beautiful! I know its a cliché but I felt very... free... and youthful! Not that I'm old but it really brought out the kid in me. Afterwards I got in my car and thought "who needs this big heavy monstrous piece of metal?"

Maria discovers her inner child

For today I stayed close to home and cycled around my large neighbourhood. I felt very safe and comfortable. I'm looking forward to the skills training tomorrow to find out how to do this 'properly'. If this beautiful weather keeps up we are gonna have an amazing 10 days!!!

12th June Maria's Mission Statement

Maria on a Mission to

Achieve Cycling Awesomeness

From Maria Kalaitzake:

 "Hey everyone,

Well the last time I sat on a bike was more then 20 years ago so here's hoping I still know how to cycle (not even kidding!).
My aim is to become one of those people who effortlessly use their bikes to get from A to... B (school, shops, park...).
I've always looked at those people in admiration and with a bit of envy, so I've decided to finally bite the bullet and join Operation Transportation as my starting point.

I have to admit I live a relatively sedentary lifestyle so this is pretty exciting and challenging (read scary) for me.
I really need some guidance about cycling in traffic as the thought of it scares the hell out me but other than that I am really looking forward to a week of fun, learning and ...getting a step closer to being the person I want to be (yay go me!!!)"
