The dynamic duo Aine and Shauna

Day three of bike week marked my first day cycling in Cork City, I still haven't worked up the courage to cycle to work in rush hour traffic. Instead Aine (one of my fellow bloggers) and I took our bikes out together.

We met up on Monaghan road and took our bikes down by The Marina. This is a nice quiet road in the evenings so it was perfect area for me to ease into cycling in the city.

From there we took out bikes to along the old Blackrock Railway. We continued along there until we reached Mahon Point Shopping Centre. We travelled back along the same route.

Personally, todays cycle was my favourite so far, not only was it a great way to spend an evening with a friend but also I've only recently moved to Cork so this was a perfect opportunity for me too see some of the sights and popular areas around Cork.

Keep updated with Shaunas adventures all week by following our Operation Transportation facebook and twitter pages. All Cork Bike Week events are available on the Cork bike Week Facebook Page.

Not living in Cork? There are events all over the country just check out www.bikeweek.ie for all national listings

I was more courageous today - attempted my first junction! Granted it was during the match and the roads were basically empty, but it was the perfect time to get over my fear.

I cycled down Monaghan Road and met up with Shauna. I like to have a bike buddy, I needed the motivation to go out in the rain today.

The roads today were a little tricky at times, there's work going on down at the marina so they're not in the best shape! As Shauna described we took the old railway line path just past the Atlantic Pond and cycled to Mahon Point.

I never knew that the path existed, it was kind of by luck that we stumbled onto it. It's a great cycle, but I wouldn't venture onto it alone. It was a great second day.

13th June 2016 - Euro 2016 Fever

MICHAEL CYCLES THE CITY TO SOAK UP SOME OF THE ATMOSPHERE:

Michael writes..

Euro 2016 fever has well & truly hit Ireland with when national team played their first game of the tournament against Sweden today. I'm sure most of us at this point have seen some of the photos & videos of Irish fans enjoying themselves in France.

If you havent seen any of the videos, check out this local French resident getting the irish crowds going HERE

Following the conclusion of today's draw with Sweden I decided to cycle around Cork City to see if people here were enjoying themselves as much as our fellow country people in France.

Despite Ireland failing to get the win it was nice to see all the people out and about wearing green and in great spirits! It made the cycle an enjoyable experience seeing the city so busy at that time on a Monday evening.

Brilliant image taken from RedFm Facebook page showing the crowds at The Courtyard on Sober Lane

However, with the volume of people in the city it created a problem for me. As people may have had a few too many drinks their balance wasn't the best and with the cycling paths right next to the footpaths it required me to be more alert of my surroundings in case anyone accidentally stumbled out of a pub in front of me.

Cork has newly installed contraflow lanes to make the city access easier for cyclists. Many lanes are adjacent to the cities most popular pubs as Michael may have passed on his cycle! For your own interest check out where they are HERE .

Thankfully my cycle passed without incident and I was able to soak in the atmosphere when passing crowds of Irish fans.

Hopefully just like Ireland in the Euros, my cycling experiences will continue on an upward curve and bring great enjoyment.

Meet Donnacha!

Introducing another Operation Transportation Blogger who has put themselves back in the saddle for Bike Week 2016.... Meet Donnacha:

Donnacha lives just a few miles outside of Innishannon with his wife and little girl.
He has always had a keen interest in cycling and enjoys it when on his holidays too!

Donnacha cycling on a recent trip to Krakow

In the past Donnacha cycled a lot when he lived in Douglas and even used to cycle to work!

Unfortunately since moving his commute is a little too long to saddle up for on a daily basis. As he doesnt get out as much as he would like to anymore - Operation Transportation has given him the spur he needed to get back in gear!

Check out these tips if your thinking of getting back into the saddle yourself: www.training4cyclists.com/getting-back-in-the-saddle/
