16th June 2015 - Blowing away those early morning cobwebs!

What a way to wake up!

Aisling writes:

I cycle to work most mornings if possible. It such a nice way to start the morning, zooming down Boreenmanna Road.

It blows away all the cobwebs and makes me feel fresh for the day.

As usual I wear my helmet. I think it’s so important to always wear a bike helmet. I fell off my bike last November, skidded on ice and went flying across the road. I realised that day the importance of always wearing a helmet!

16th June 2015 - Multitasking Chris

The Multitasking Speedster Big Brother

CHRIS

Life is busy!
Things didn't go quite so smoothly today for Chris and myself on our Operation Transportation mission. I am ashamed to admit, I flunked it. I had intended to cycle to a meeting in Rochestown for 6pm but got held up during the afternoon and couldn't leave early enough to make it by bike.

Chris got out twice on his bike - He tells us his story:

"Hi, Chris Bateman here. I went on my third cycle for Operation Transportation today. I must say though, it was not as peaceful or beautiful as my last two cycles were. I had spent my whole morning varnishing the boat, so I planned nothing for the afternoon.

But it turned out that Star of the Sea primary school (where my younger brother and my two sisters go, the other sister goes to a different school) was closing at midday due to no running water. This was unexpected for us (my mom and I were the only ones in the house). I was told to collect Ethel and Thea, and come straight home. I was already going to offer to collect, but sure ye know what moms are like.

So I put my new gadget thingy that I got from Operation Transportation on by bike. I think it's pretty cool! So I headed off on the trek down the almost vertical hill (I think it's Church Hill?) at 35 kilometres per hour. I thought it was pretty fast for my standards, but I didn't want to be late. I'd be killed! I was practising my road cycling, but there were not any cars around up the Back Road.

Somehow I managed to crash. I was turning onto the kerb, and I misjudged the turn. The wheel skidded and I went over the handlebars into the wall. Don't worry, I wore my helmet! I landed on my feet with only a scratch. On the way back I was sick of going 1 kilometre per hour for Ethel (who was walking, she didn't have a bike), so I put her on the saddle and I stood up on the pedals and we free wheeled down the hills. The tricky bit was the estate. I managed to make it up the hill without dying (even at my age) and get inside to eat lunch and finish varnishing. I had a great time, looking forward to tomorrow."

NEVER FORGET GANG!

14th, 15th, 16th June 2015 - Meet Allison

Meet Allison, the Clonakilty Chocolatier

Introduction - Allison Roberts is a chocolate maker who loves living a car-free life in Clonakilty and her Brompton folding bicycle makes it a pleasure.  She is also an organiser of the Clonakilty Bicycle Festival and founder of Sustainable Clonakilty's Transport Group.  The trickiest thing she finds is getting out for pleasure cycles on weekends when the energy can be a bit low, so her goal this year is to get on and have a spin of the town to raise the spirits as much as possible!

Sunday June 14th

Today was the last day of the Clonakilty Bicycle Festival and a great day to kick off 'Operation Transportation'!  I had a short cycle into town this morning, 5 km followed by a 35 km round trip dinner cycle our to Courtmacsherry and back for a spectacular fish supper, was a beautiful evening and cycled home along the bay about 9:30pm just as the sun was setting.

Today I went up and down our Hill to town about 4 times, it's a whopper hill and I'm still amazed how fit a little hill-cycling can make you, it's great to feel the heart race.  The last time was on a call to meet some friends from out of town for a coffee on Asna Square, another stunning evening in Clonakilty!

Today I haven't made it onto my bike, working from home means sometimes I might go the day without leaving the property and I'm playing catch up after a great bike festival weekend so I'm afraid there's been no peddling!  Tomorrow I will make sure to at least get a lap of the town in!

16th June 2015 - Finding Cork's Landmarks! Martin's journey

In time confidence will be achieved

Martin writes:

Today I cycled along Harbour View Rd, turned right onto Blarney Road and headed for Clogheen, down to Kerry pike. While stopped at Mitchell Court, Kerry Pike, you could hear the sound of lawnmowers, strimmers and other garden tools in the background as people took advantage of the lovely evening.

15th June 2015, Office Life: A Breath of fresh air at Lunch for Grace

Walk, run, cycle, it all counts!

Grace writes:

Today I decided to walk to work or in transportation speak, mix my mode. I generally like walking to work because I live such a short distance and it allows me to listen to new music and I get to feel like I have a bit of a day going on before I hit the office.

Walking or cycling it doesnt matter, get active, get fit, feel good!

The launch of the Coke Zero bikes provided the perfect opportunity for me to get cycling during my work day. For 10 euro a year I get an annual subscription to this service and  I think its probably fair to say, its been the best value for money I have gotten all year.

I use it on average around three to four times a week, either to commute to the other side of the city or to go home for lunch. The docks are pretty much everywhere (bar the suburbs) and the stations are replenished regularly so you will not have the crushing disappointment of reaching a dock without any bikes.

My only gripe with the bikes (and its a fairly minor one) is the basket. I wish it was just a solid basket instead of two pieces of stretching fabric. I tend to be a bit of a bag lady and trying to fit all my junk into that basket can sometimes be a challenge. But as I said that is a minor gripe in an otherwise superb design.

The bell has proved useful as Irish people have still not gotten used to bike lanes being just for bikes and tend to saunter along in the bike lanes oblivious to oncoming bike traffic like naive tourists would in Amsterdam or Copenhagen.

The bikes are heavier than an average hybrid and usually at the top of the hill to my house I am puffed out and sweating but I feel like after a morning sitting at a desk, this can only be a good thing and I get the pleasure of a downhill on the way back to relax and refresh for the afternoon ahead.
